Wednesday What´s Up with the Crew?

A BLAST from the past!
Each of my boys have picked three favorite pictures from their baby albums to post on their blog The Contreras Crew Constructing and Company. Maybe we will continue to stroll down memory lane each Wednesday and Friday.
It has been so much fun to look through the albums with the boys.

My Little Men

They aren´t so little anymore! It seems like they are growing up right before my eyes!

My three little men were so active this weekend with a Karate tournament and a football clinic.

I was so happy for them. It was their first tournament and another opportunity to wear all their football gear. Of course not all at the same time!

These activites really boosted our whole family moral incredibly this week. The boys were active and felt so grown up, that they were so good at home and out and about. This is what we do to help our home run a little more smoothly, we get the boys out for physical activity.

Boys need lots of physical activity.

I have found when my boys have had good physical activity they tend to be more pliable and calm at home. This makes my home sing.

Here are some pictures and a video of some good physical activity!

So how do you make your home sing with boys or with girls or with both?

"Let him deny himself"

featured quiet time picture taken by Nina

"For the Son of man shall come in the glory
of his Father with his angels;
and then he shall reward every man
according to his works."
Matthew 16:27

This is definitely what we are waiting for or should be waiting for. It should be every Christian´s desire to see Jesus! Oh, what a day that will be!

It is so appropriate how this verse comes after the Lord speaks on denying oneself and following Him. When we accept what Jesus did on the cross for us and repent of our sin we are immediately His child. However, Jesus says "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross, and follow me." I look at this as a daily walk with Him.

I am definitely not the one to preach this sermon!

It seems that denying oneself includes time, feelings, personal space, and even desires. These things don´t automatically fall under submission. It´s work. It´s a daily battle.

When Jesus comes, how will he find me? What state of mind and heart will I be in?

Today, I want to think of the beauty of His second coming. I want to see my Saviors face, but what will He see in me?

"Cleanse my heart oh God. May I be like you. You are the Potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me. This is what I pray. " (this may be a mixture of two songs)

Seeking His face,

Wednesday "What´s up with the Crew!"

Today was a little difficult in some areas. The boys are having to learn things the hard way. Loss of privileges, disappointments, and lessons.

This has been really hard on me too. I really want them to learn from their mistakes. Lessons like responsibility, discipline, promptness, and trustworthiness are just a few of the things we have been dealing with. I know these character traits don´t develope overnight but they sure are tough to instill on a daily basis.

I have been doing some internalizing too. Maybe, they are not seeing these qualities enough in me and thus they are having a more difficult time cultivating them in their lives.

Don´t get me wrong, we have good moments too. Like when they decide they are going to clean out their toys to give all the toys they are too old for to a younger missionary child we know. Like when they stick up for a boy in the park who is getting picked on, like when they say thank you all on their own for something I normally do for them, and like when they go out to hand out invitations for church with us.

I know I need to focus on these things, but at the same time I desire so much more. I need to get myself more disciplined, more responsible, more prompt, so they see in me an example to follow.

Pray as I endevor to finish out this school year with a renewed strength to get back to the schedule and chore at hand.

Bragging Rights (In my case, Praising Rights!)

Para los que hablan Español Este enlace es un articlo de mi marido y los Gijón, Mariners que salio en La Nueva España.

GO MARINERS!!

I have mentioned before that my hubby has been playing on the local American Football team, the Gijón Mariners as a means to reach out to young men and the community. Today, they played against the Sevilla Linces (Linx) and won 45-21! It was a really fun game. I also got to know some of the girlfriends and wives a little better.
I am praising the Lord for my incredible hubby. I am praising the Lord for keeping him safe. And I am praising the Lord for this wonderful opportunity.

In the month of March a local paper wanted to interview, my hubby about the work he does and his involvment with the Gijón Mariners. We were excited but didn´t want to get our hopes up too much. Within two weeks, we got a call saying that the article had run.

We got the paper and began looking for it. I was looking for a little interest article that would have maybe a small black and white picture of my hubby, so we looked through the whole paper without really finding it. Then, we went to the center section that was especially for our city. It´s called "More Gijón."

There in the middle was a full page article about my hubby, the ministry and the Gijón Mariners! IN COLOR!

What is so exciting, is that the picture that was taken in our church meeting place has on the wall behind my hubby, John 14:6 in huge letters.

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father but by me."

This was circulated through out all of Gijón! The best literature distibution we could have ever hoped for!

I have posted the whole article and it´s translation. The newspaper reporter did all his own research on the Baptists. He did not ask my hubby at all about that back ground info. Another amazing outcome!
Here is the article and it´s translation as it appeared in the newspaper "La Nueva España"

The Baptist Church is the largest non catholic Christian group

Joe Contreras, in his church´s meeting place in the neighborhood of El Coto.

The Baptist Church is made up of a group of evangelical Christian churches who are tied together by common beliefs and church organization. From their beginnings they were persecuted both by catholics and protestants alike principally due to their emphasis on separation of church and state and for considering that only in the Bible can be found the source of doctrine and practice for the church and for Christians. Baptists emphasize the need for a personal and genuine faith in Jesus Christ to obtain salvation. Today, Baptist churches constitute the largest non catholic Christian group in the world, with more than 37 million members just in countries in the western world.

A pastor among mariners

Contreras at practice with the Mariners´ uniform.

Joe Contreras of the United States is a minister of the Baptist Church and player of the Gijón Mariners, with whom he joined shortly after arriving in Asturias in the year 2005.

Finding a Baptist pastor in Gijón is not easy, neither is stumbling across a football player. As such, Joe Contreras is a singular case because he brings together both conditions. Contreras is responsible for the Baptist church found in the Gijón neighborhood of El Coto, as well as a football player of the Gijón Mariners. Born in California 36 years ago, Contreras is married, has three sons, two of whom were born in Spain, where he has lived since the year 2000. “My first destination was Mataró, where I lived until 2005 [actually 2002], the year that I came to Asturias. First I was for a time in Oviedo and later Gijón,” our protagonist indicates. Joe confesses to had fallen in love with Spanish culture, which led him to even study Spanish guitar and to desire to live in Spain. He achieved that and is enchanted with the experience, which in addition has permitted him to practice the sport that he has liked most, but for diverse circumstances was not able to dedicate himself until now. “I always liked football and I played it with my friends, but I never played on a team because in high school and in college I was more in to music,” he acknowledges.

However, shortly after arriving in Gijón, he saw a guy with a football helmet under his arm leave a building - that was right in front of the building where he lives - and was interested in knowing if there was a team in Gijón in order to see games. That neighbor was Aaron Gonzalez, a player of the Gijón Mariners, and from that point on began Contreras´ relationship with the Gijón team. That was the year 2005 and since then has been on the roster. “First I played running back but now I play safety,” that is, one of the last defensive players on the field of play. Interestingly, his partner in that position is Aaron, his first casual contact with the Mariners. Contreras defines American football - for him simply football because in the United States, European football is “soccer” - as “a very technical game and above all very strategic for which you need a few years of experience before understanding well all that this sport demands.” The Mariners are a team that is starting and, according to Contreras, “is working very well with schools and institutes and even organizes training camps in which a number of young people attend,” through which he hopes that little by little this sport becomes more popular in Gijón. The Mariners began the season well, with two victories, but after had to measure up to the strongest teams in the league and suffered three losses. “You learn and improve playing against the best,” Contreras considers, to whom it is “a great way to take steps forward.”

Interested and concerned with what goes on in the city, the US citizen confesses to have been very happy for the ascent of Sporting [Gijón 1st division soccer team] “although I couldn´t see the celebration because I was in the US, but they told me about it, and I hope to see a game.” He also follows the basketball team and has some contact with the American players on the team.

To him, his dual activity as Baptist pastor and American football player does not seem that rare: “In the teams in Murcia and Granada there are two other colleagues, and in the NFL (the American professional league) there are a number of both players and coaches,” he assures. Joe Contreras is also very pleased about his pastoral work in Gijón. “We have formed a very interesting group,” he assures. A group that meets periodically in a small storefront on Quevedo street, so much so that they are looking for another larger in the same area, something that is not very easy.

So you see why I have bragging rights today! Or in my case, Praising Rights! I am so thankful to God for my wonderful hubby!

FREE DAY and CADBURY EGGS

Thursday turned into my FREE DAY! I didn´t wake up saying "YIPPEE" it´s FREE DAY but it just evolved.

It all started out with a hot coffee, cake, and a long talk at our fellow missionaries home. I got all warm inside and had another and another... and.. well, no I did stop but you get the idea.

Then I figured, hey I better make it my FREE DAY! Those Cadbury Eggs my mom sent me all the way from Minnisota have been calling my name.

I got home, heated up some more coffee and sat down with my Bible, and my Cadbury Cream EGG!!! WOOOO HOOOO!!! Not just one and not the little ones either. Two big boys. Oh, they were so worth it!

It was great! I enjoyed my splurge!

But it was just that. And those other Beautifully wrapped Cadbury Cream Eggs are going to have to stay right there on the shelf until my next FREE DAY. ( a little hidden of course)

So my dear fitness friends, keep keeping fit even if those crazy eggs are calling you by name!

"Are ye also yet with out understanding?"

Is Jesus saying here
that we just aren´t getting it?
We don´t get it!
And neither did the disciples.

Matthew 15:16-20

In the beginning of this chapter, Jesus was speaking to the Pharisees because they were all up in arms over the disciples not washing their hands before they ate. They asked Jesus in verse 2 why the disciples were transgressing the traditions of the elders by not washing their hands. And Jesus asked them a question in return. "Why do you transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? They were doing lip service but their hearts were far from God.

Jesus told the Disciples not to worry about what the Pharisees said and to leave them alone; to let the blind lead the blind.

So often in Christian circles this happens. We end up following traditions and even trends; not what is Biblical. Traditions become the pedistool on which we stand or trends become the flag that we wave. Heart examination is necessary. A Christian needs to look deep into his or her heart to be sure what is there is God honoring, because what is in the heart is what will eventually come out of the mouth.

"But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man." Matthew 15:18-20

The Lord really spoke to me through these verses. Asking me what was I holding on to in my life as traditions and what was really in my heart.

And yet another application to this passage, is to always be sure that what is coming out of my mouth is edifying not defiling.
As I meditate on this more, more applications come.
Jesus´ teachings and his relationships with people are amazing!

Monday Ministry Highlights - "Every Day I´m Amazed"

Today, I am posting over at the KJV blog.
Here is the song I featured.
Also, there is an update on our ministry.
"In God´s heart there´s a space
That I was made to fill
I find amazing grace
When I´m found within His will
And He´s reserved a special place
In the midst of ever day
He is waiting there for me
Inviting me to stay."

Chorus
"And every day I´m amazed
That God would spend each day with me
I´m overwhlemed by His ways
That He could feel such love for me
To Him I´m worth saving
And my heart is cravingTo know Him inHis Righteousness
And understand His ways
Every day, in every way I´m amazed."

"In my heart there´s a space
That only God can fill
And He covers my disgrace
With the blood that Jesus spilled
And He invites me to that place
In the midst of every day
He is waiting there for me
He´s inviting me to stay"

Chorus
"And every day I´m amazed
That God would spend each day with me
I´m overwhlemed by His ways
That He could feel such love for me
To Him I´m worth saving
And my heart is craving
To know Him in His Righteousness
And understand His ways
Every day, in every way I´m amazed." by Cary Schmidt

Happy Easter! I prefer to say Blessed Resurrection!!
May you know God´s Glorious Grace today!

Two Fold Road Trip - A Missions Vacation?

We took a vacation this year. It was definitely two fold. From Gijón to Granada, Spain to Barcelos, Portugal. Literally the whole length of both countries, seeing the beginnings of great things God is doing in the lives and work of two missionary families.
We visited the Stark family in Granada. They have been there since July and are just recently starting a new church. Please pray for them as they are the only Independent Baptists in the whole city.

(Pilar has a blog. She posts about the ministry, her family and her walk with our Lord.
She has such a heart for the Lord and it´s evident in her blog. )

I have mentioned before how both of our husbands are involved in American football teams here in Spain. They are getting to know the guys and we are getting to know their families. Please pray for this ministry. It´s tough on our men as they aren´t in high school anymore, but they do hang with the best of them. Many of the guys ask questions and even come to us for advice.

Pastors Matthew Stark and Joseph Contreras

The Granada Lions vs. the Gijón Mariners

These are our future players and fans, maybe, but what makes this picture dear to me is that they were my Sunday School class a year and a half ago. Remember to pray for your MKs as well. They sure do need it.

Some more pictures of our time in Granada.

The Alhambra is incredible! We hope to go back and see all of it, and to be with our favorite people in Granada.
There are so many pictures I would love to share but you are just going to have to come to this beautiful country and see it for yourself some day.

Then it was north to Portugal to visit a missionary family I had only met in this bloggy world. Nina, quickly became a dear friend and I realized we had so much in common. The Andrzejewski family are Independent Baptist Missionaries to Barcelos, Portugal only about 5 hours from us. They have been in Portugal now for a little over a year and will be looking to start a new church in a nearby city. Please be in prayer for this dear family and their ministry.

(You need to check out Nina´s blog. She cracked me up at with her Mama fits and her trip to the dentist. She had me hooked. It is evident her love for her Lord and her family.)

It was as if we had known each other for a long time. Our boys are asking when we can go back to Portugal already.

Here are some pictures of the oldest outdoor market in Portugal. It was similar to the ones in Spain, but larger and some parts were a little crazy.

This made Isaiah really sad. These bunnies were for sale for eating purposes.

These bunnies were for Easter. (I think )

We don´t see this in Spain. It seemed to be common though in Portugal for ladies to carry things on their heads.

Barcelos, Portugal

Nina and me!

Pilar, the ladies in her church, her girls and me.

Thank girls for such a wonderful time!
You are so special to me!

For those of you who made it to the end of the this post, here is a picture Nina took of my hubby and me. It´s one of my favorites. The coast reminds me of Maine, but with a European twist.

Hope you enjoyed seeing our missions vacation road trip.

Happy Resurrection Day!
